Why I love the wilderness

I have always been drawn to the wilderness. I like to use the statement “I’m a low tech man in a high tech world”, yet I am writing this on my computer … Modern society is a good thing in many ways, but not if you lose contact with your inner wildman (or -woman).

I know my fascination with the wilderness and all the nights and days I’ve spent under the open sky in Norway has influenced my writing a lot. I am not one of those writers you’ll find in a café, I’m much happier by the fireplace. Now, there isn’t really a rational reason behind this fascination. I am sure that most people could come up with a thousand arguments why an urban life can be a fulfilling life. However, do you really get to know yourself in a city? I don’t think so. What I think, is that most city-dwellers would have a much happier life if they would get out in the woods, up in the mountains or out on the sea more often. The forest is real – a sitcom is not. I love the wilderness because it’s real, and I want to live my life as real as possible.
